Methicillin-Resistant Staphylcoccus Aureus—MRSA
MRSA was first found in the Untied Kingdom in 1961 and is now found worldwide and often referred to as a "superbug." Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of staph infections and the MRSA strand of Staphylococcus aureus is resistant to beta-lactans, which include the penicillins and the cephalosporins. Within the variations of MRSA infections, there is a super strand known as PVL-MRSA that can kill within 72 hours. The danger of super MRSA is that it is a resistant infection and any MRSA infection could come from part of the super strand. Because of the speed of the infection, most people who contract super MRSA die within three days. Often times people die before realizing they are even in such great danger.
Because of the resistance to the penicillins and cephalosporins, the best way to treat MRSA and Super MRSA is to prevent infection. This is difficult because MRSA can live almost anywhere.
